COVID & COLLEGE
Just weeks before the opening of North Shore Community College's production of Sophocles' ANTIGONE, which I was directing, COVID-19 forced us to cancel. The college's student programming came to a halt, classes transitioned to virtual formats, and everything changed all at once for everybody.
During the fall semester, I had to reimagine how we could still showcase theatre at the college, all while addressing the disappointment of students from the previous semester. Despite the ongoing challenges of COVID, I believed we could create something meaningful. I successfully proposed a pre-recorded audio storytelling project to the college administration, allowing interested students to participate in ANIMAL TAILS, which explored trickster figures from around the world. The community truly appreciated our efforts! Here you can listen to one of those tales, RAVEN TAKES BACK THE SUN, which I also wrote:
That spring, vitual and online teaching continued, only this time I was inspired to launch an exciting project based on the golden age of radio: MURDER BY THE MINUTE! Using scripts from the classic radio series Five Minute Mysteries, the students and I worked together to create multiple episodes across seven unique mystery series. This effort resulted in 21 short mysteries delivered in various formats, including audio recordings, simple animated videos, and short films, all shared virtually with our college community. The feedback was incredibly positive, and the students' enthusiasm led to similar audio projects becoming a staple of my Beginning Acting class!
You can experience two of the episodes we created below.
